the best Luxury resorts in Maui
If you’re looking for the best 5-star resorts in Maui, you’re in the right place. Maui is arguably one of the best places for honeymoons and has many high-end luxury resorts to choose from.
Here is a list of the best luxury resorts in Maui, in no particular order. Click on the hotel name to check pricing and availability for your dates. If you’d like a fully customized trip with a Hawaii travel specialist, make sure to contact me.
Do you need a rental car in Maui?
I always recommend renting a car in Maui, no matter where you’re staying. The islands in Hawaii are meant for exploring, and you truly need a car as public transportation can be hit and miss (and expensive!) I recommend Discount Hawaii Rental Cars. They offer the best rates for rental cars on the Hawaiian islands, and you don’t have to pay until you pick up your car.
The best 5-star resorts on Maui
Here are the best 5-star resorts on Maui in no particular order. If you’re looking for an adults-only or family-friendly luxury resort in Maui, makes sure to read the details as I’ll share more on that for each resort.
Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea
No list of the best luxury resorts on Maui would be complete without mentioning the Four Seasons Maui. Overlooking Wailea Beach, this luxury oceanfront resort offers three pools and three on-site restaurants.
The Four Seasons has one of the best children’s programs around (and post-closures, the only kids club that opened up again), but it’s also an excellent option for honeymooners. The staff is incredible, and the view is one of the best on Maui.
Andaz Maui at Wailea
The Andaz Maui at Wailea is another popular destination for honeymooners. This trendy hotel is also one of the most eco-friendly resorts in Maui. It was Hawaii’s first LEED-certified resort and uses recycled materials and composts food waste. It is a plastic-free property and one of the first to utilize refillable water bottles with refill stations. Most of the luxury resorts in Maui have followed suit.
The Andaz Maui has an adults-only pool in a quieter area, which is great for honeymoon couples. You can also enjoy four incredible on-site restaurants and in-room dining. Although the Andaz is not adults-only, you’ll find fewer children here as there aren’t many amenities for families at this resort.
There are plenty of amenities included in your resort fee, so make sure to take advantage of them.
Check out my full review here: Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort Review.
Hana-Maui Resort
Hana-Maui Resort (now part of the Hyatt brand) opened in 1948 and expanded with the bungalow side in 1984.
Both the suites and bungalows are very large, much larger than your typical hotel or resort room. The sizes vary, but the bungalows are over 800 square feet, so about double the size of an average Hawaii hotel room.
While Hawaii has no true all-inclusive resorts, the Hana-Maui Resort (formerly Travaasa Hana) can be close as they sometimes offer meal packages. The Hana-Maui is tucked away near Hana (yes, as in the road to Hana) and is very quiet and different from anything else you’ll find.
Again, this is not an adults-only hotel; there may be fewer families here since it is so removed from the popular areas of Maui with fewer amenities for kids. Check out my full review of the Hana Maui Resort here.
Ritz-Carlton Kapalua
Located in West Maui, the Ritz-Carton Kapalua is perfect for golfers and those who want the best of the best in a 5-star luxury resort. The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua is more isolated than many resorts, making it perfect for those who want a quieter getaway.
If golfing is an important part of your vacation, check out The 15 best golf courses in Maui.
Hotel Wailea
If you’re looking for an adults-only resort, this is the only luxury resort on Maui that is truly only for adults. The Hotel Wailea is the only Relais & Châteaux hotel in Hawaii. This boutique hotel has only 72 one-bedroom suites and is set on three tropical acres.
Tesla Model X house vehicles make it convenient for guests to explore the beautiful area, even without a rental car. The Hotel Wailea is consistently voted one of the best hotels in Hawaii and also one of the top 100 hotels in the world by Travel+Leisure.
If adults-only is a must, this is the only option that I recommend! A close second is the Andaz, mentioned above, but it is not technically adults-only. Check out my Hotel Wailea Review here.
Four Seasons Lanai
While the Four Seasons Lanai is technically on the island of Lanai, it had to make the list of the best 5-star resorts on Maui. This luxury resort is everything you’d expect of a Four Seasons. The Four Seasons Lanai offers more privacy than the luxury resorts on the other islands.
Although all Four Seasons resorts are kid-friendly, you won’t find as many children on Lanai due to the remote location of the resort. The Four Seasons Lanai also has two lagoon-style pools; one is adults-only. If you want to get away from it all, Lanai is a great choice and just a 45-minute ferry ride from Maui.
If you’re looking for things to do on Lanai beyond relaxing at the spa or golfing, I’d recommend the Lanai Cat Sanctuary. This visitor-supported sanctuary protects both local cats and native birds on an island with no shelters and no veterinarians.
Grand Wailea Resort and Spa
If you’re looking for the best luxury resort in Maui for families, the Grand Wailea Resort and Spa might be exactly what you’re looking for. Although I love this property for families, it’s also a favorite for honeymooners, particularly those who want an incredible spa experience.
This luxury 40-acre oceanfront resort features nine pools, seven bars, and seven restaurants. In 2023, the property underwent a 300-million-dollar renovation, including over 50 million in renovations to the spa.
One of the highlights is the newly renovated Kilolani Spa. This spa is a must for anyone in the Wailea area, whether you’re staying at Grand Wailea or not. Drawing inspiration from the Hawaiian moon calendar, which divides each month into three moon phases, Kilolani Spa creates the space for healing, rejuvenation, and restoration.
I was recently touring a few of the Wailea resorts and two other resorts mentioned how their spas can’t compete with Kilolani Spa!
Montage Kapalua Bay
The Montage Kapalua Bay is a 5-star resort located on the West side of Maui on 24 oceanfront acres. The premier all-suites resort offers plenty of space along with housekeeping twice a day (yes, twice!)
Although you can cook in your suite, the resort provides the excellent restaurants you would expect from a 5-star resort. You can also enjoy some golf on two nearby golf courses. Or, swim or snorkel in the ocean that is just a few steps from your room.
Like most of the resorts on this list, the Montage Kapalua Bay is not adults-only. However, it does feature an adults-only pool.
Hyatt Regency Maui Resort
Hyatt Regency Maui is technically a 4-star resort, but it’s a favorite of mine for both families and honeymoons, so I’ll share it anyway. If you’d like to learn more about working with me to provide the ultimate concierge service for your Maui vacation, fill out my contact form, and let’s chat about it! I create a custom itinerary for all my clients with recommendations that are hand-picked just for you.
The amenities and services at this Maui resort are spread out on 40 acres of beachfront property. The entire resort went through a major renovation in 2020.
There is an adults-only pool, but it is located next door at the Hyatt timeshare property. However, it is available for use for those staying at the Hyatt Regency Maui if you need to get away from the family-friendly pools at the Hyatt. Personally, I’ve found that there are enough pools (and they are big) where it wasn’t an issue!
