The Best Happy Hours in Kona
Are you looking for the best Happy Hours in Kona? You’re in the right place! You probably already know that Hawaii is expensive and Happy Hour is a great way to save.
Your insta-worthy drink might be pretty, but it might cost $15-$20, so you better savor it! Taking advantage of Happy Hour is one of the best ways to save money on a Hawaii vacation.
It might seem like I am a little biased and write more about the Big Island of Hawaii than anything else.
Well, it’s true! I love the Big Island, and I’m not sorry about it. Today’s post is a fun one, the best Happy Hours in Kona.
The best Happy Hours on the Big Island
Even if you don’t want a drink, Happy Hour can be a great time to save money on food too.
You’ll often find great deals on appetizers during Happy Hour, plus that $ 5 mai tais can’t be beaten.
If you’re planning a Big Island vacation and are looking for more tips, keep reading at the bottom of this post for more Big Island travel tips.
You’ll definitely need a rental car on the Big Island; I recommend Discount Hawaii Car Rental. You’ll find the best prices on rental cars, and you don’t have to pay until you pick up the car.
This list has been updated in 2021 to reflect some of the businesses that unfortunately shut down permanently in 2020. 🙁 We will miss you, Bongo Bens and Splashers Grill!
I will try to keep this list as up-to-date as possible but keep in mind that hours and prices may change.
Best Happy Hours in Kona
Kona, technically Kailua Kona, is located on the west side of the island of Hawaii, or the Big Island. This is the “tourist area,” with most of the Big Island resorts being north of Kona.
Kona town is where you’ll find all of the action, including most of the restaurants on this list.

In no particular order, here are the best Happy Hours in Kona.
Don’s Mai Tai Bar
Any time you ask about the best happy hours in Kona, you’ll hear about Don’s Mai Tai Bar. They offer $6 mai tais and other drink discounts from 4-6 PM.
Oceans Sports Bar and Grill
Located in the heart of Kona on Ali’i Drive, Oceans Sports Bar and Grill offers great Happy Hour prices on beer and mai tais. The fish tacos are also discounted during Happy Hour.
On The Rocks
On The Rocks offers $5 mai tais, $4 pupus, and one of Kona’s best views because it is (as the name implies) directly on the water!
Kona Inn
If you’ve read any of my blog posts, you know that the best mai tai in Kona is at the Kona Inn! I’m not particularly impressed with their food, but the mai tais are amazing.
Get a $6 mai tai and other drink specials from 2-5 PM daily.
Island Lava Java
I had to call Lava Java while writing this blog post because their happy hour isn’t listed anywhere online. It was a little weird calling to inquire about Happy Hour at 8 AM. 🙂
I knew that they had one and confirmed that it is 3:30-5:30 PM daily.
Lava Lava Beach Club
Lava Lava Beach Club is not in Kona but just north in the resort area of Waikoloa. If you’re staying at the Hilton Waikoloa, Waikoloa Beach Marriott, or nearby area, you’ll be very close to this great restaurant.
Lava Lava Beach Club offers $6 mai tais and food discounts from 3-5 PM. Stay after 5 for live music every night!
The best Happy Hours in Kona
If you try any of these Happy Hour specials or find any others, let me know in the comments! This should go without saying, but don’t forget to tip your server appropriately.
Discounted drinks and food should not mean a discounted tip. After all, your server lives in Hawaii, and it’s very expensive. 🙂

Thank you so much for all of your tips and insights! We are at the Hilton Waikoloa Village right now! We went to Lava lava beach club yesterday and it was awesome! Do you have any other happy hour recommendations for Waikoloa? Thanks so much!
Hey Vanessa, thank you so much!! I don’t but venture down to Kona!! Tons of good ones there. Waikoloa is a resort area so the drinks at the resorts are expensive. 😉
